Our first ₱10,000 came from a year-end bonus. Eleven December deposits showed us how “pay ourselves first” could become a habit.

The first contribution
The December total is a different number
The first ₱10,000 contribution was one transaction. We made ten more deposits during December, bringing the month’s total to ₱27,500 across 11 transactions. The smallest deposit was ₱500 and the largest was the initial ₱10,000; the average was ₱2,500 per deposit. Our first month of PERA saving: 11 deposits across five dates, totaling ₱27,500. These are contributions, not investment gains.| Date | Deposits on this date | Daily total |
|---|---|---|
| December 2 | 1 | ₱10,000 |
| December 3 | 1 | ₱2,000 |
| December 6 | 2 | ₱6,000 |
| December 19 | 6 | ₱5,500 |
| December 26 | 1 | ₱4,000 |
| December 2025 | 11 | ₱27,500 |
The first deposit and the full-month total describe different things. Neither is an investment gain; both are money we placed into the account.
The same distinction will matter in every portfolio update. Contributions tell readers how much capital we put in. Dividends, realized gains or losses, and changes in the value of holdings tell a different part of the story.
Our working target: 10% on average
From that beginning, we adopted a pay-ourselves-first habit. We aim to set aside 10% of the income that passes through our hands on average before allocating the rest to other uses. Hindi kailangang eksaktong 10% ang bawat deposit. The target gives us a repeatable decision whenever income arrives, subject to what our household can actually afford. We began later than we would have liked. We cannot recover the years that have passed. We can decide how to handle income arriving now and keep a clear record of our contributions.
What we measure first
The first milestone was the act of contributing and then contributing again. Investment performance comes later and needs its own accounting: what we bought, the fees we paid, the dividends received, the cost of shares sold, and any gains or losses. We will not present deposits as profit. The next article explains why our long-term retirement account has an active investment method. For the complete series, return to The Journey So Far.

Shariah Compliance Advisory (Updated September 9, 2026)
The Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) has officially confirmed that it has ceased publishing its list of Shariah-compliant securities.
In November 2025, the PSE informed Micro Stock Trader that its Shariah initiative had been temporarily paused for an internal evaluation. In a subsequent email dated September 9, 2026, the PSE clarified:
“Please be informed that PSE has officially ceased publication of Shariah-compliant securities.”
Accordingly, Micro Stock Trader will continue applying a conservative, independently screened approach to its halal-focused investment strategies, in shā’ Allāh. This screening forms part of our personal portfolio governance and does not constitute an official Shariah certification or religious ruling.
